Why the idea of self growth is scary!
What is self growth? To develop one's full potential. What are your potential? You need to try a lot of different things to be able to know that. But as you wish to try a lot of different things what stops you? Your 'self'. Why? Because trying out new things risk your already established identity.
Our identity forms with what we think and do. If we choose to think differently or do different things then the identity runs a risk of getting lost or replaced by another identity. With a lot of hard work, compromises, and not to mention the fake expressions, we convinced others to like our this identity and what would happen if this is lost!? Therefore once a good identity is formed it is always risky to change it.
But we are not that simple beings. We often are triggered by our dreams, or conscience which force us to think in the direction of self improvement. There is a sense within like a which always inform us about things which can be better within and around us.
But it needs tremendous amount of courage to get out of your way to fulfill your dreams. That sounds conflicting that if it is your dreams then why would you have to go against yourself?
Well that is the case because the time when your self concept develops you generally do not have a pretty good idea of what your dreams really are. It is only later that you consciously thinks about your dreams.
The self becomes solidified. The courage is to melt this solidified self and again mold it in a way which ultimately helps you to achieve what you really need. But this is not an easier task to do, it is as difficult as to change a lean body to muscular or a fat one to skinny or maybe even more difficult than that.
For having a fixed self concept gives a strong sense of identity. If your self is in constant change then it may also lead to a kind of identity crisis. Therefore one should be very clear that what part of self is not to be touched while doing modifications in his existing self concept.
The problem with changing the self image is that you're not sure that whether the people would like your new self or not and this uncertainty is scary. The people who are familiar with you expect you to behave in a way as you have been behaving. There is always a risk that whether the new behaviour will be welcomed by those people or not. What if they begin to judge you negatively? These kinds of thoughts always hinder one's journey of self growth.
However, true joy lies in the growth for that is nature of everything alive. It seems comfortable to stay where you are but to be vulnerable and open to new possibilities is really an exciting idea. It's like a virtual rebirth to dismantle yourself and to fix it again with only what is really required.
Well it can also be said with much possibility, at least in my knowledge, that one's innate personality or temperament cannot be changed. But the self which develops as the result of that personality and environment can be nonetheless modified. Furthermore, the interaction of personality with this new character, one's self identity could be improved.
I wrote this random stuff to reinforce my identity as a writer. Please remind me of writing when you think I forgot to do so.
