Understanding "Desires" in the Time bound World

Desires - an intrinsic motivator or an substantial evil? Philosophers and theologians have described it differently. For some, desire is something to be fulfilled immediately to get happiness while for others desire is something a source of evil and must be shunned inorder to live happily.

What I think is a bit differently than both the ideas. I've Divided the Desires in two sets.

1. Wiser Desires

2. Deep Desires

1. Wiser Desires - These are the desires that are socially acceptable and are compatible with this world. Wiser Desires are desires that has to do with improvement. It could be self improvement, or the improvement of society such as propagating a good idea or eradicating a widely accepted wrong tradition.

A desire to help others, a desire to maintain justice, a desire to establish truth are included in this category of desire.

A person who pays attention to the world, who ponders over world's fallibility and life's fragility ultimately develop such desires. While those who don't pay heed on the world and try to fulfill their deep Desires fail pathetically.

2. Deep Desires - These are desires that are solely yours and are mostly hidden because of its taboo nature. It's much like Freud's concept of "id" but not necessarily that۔

These also include desires such as marrying your favourite movie character, or flying like a bird, and desire to live forever with your loved ones. Deep Desires are usually incompatible with this world.  To live in beautiful big palaces, to drive luxury sport cars, to travel mostly all the exotic places, or to read all good novels without worrying about time and without need to work or feeling of fatigue.

The most important characteristic of this Deep desire is to not being bounded by time which is to live forever without ageing or weakness.

When you see great thinkers, scientists, theologians, social workers they don't really busy in fulfilling their deep Desires (they call them petty desires but I call them deep desires because you may bury it down deep but cannot get rid of them altogether).

Such thinking persons dedicate their life for fulfilling their Wiser Desires because they know there's no point of chasing the deep desires as you cannot fulfill them in this world anyway.

Those who don't contemplate upon this Wordly life, keep chasing the deep desires and get continuously suffered in the process. The reason behind most of the corruption and crime is that when people try fulfilling their deep desires in this world.

Why people rape, loot, oppress, kill? All deep down because of "desire". Desire of sex, secure more money, etc. When people fail to realise their deep desires they get frustrated and often behave in immodest and immoral ways.

All the sins like insulting others, robbing someone's dignity are results of anxiety when people fail to fulfill their deep desires.

The desire of living forever prevents people to help the needy. They keep the money saved in banks to serve their next generations and don't give charity lest they'll cease to exist in future because of lack of money. They can go to any extremes of corruption and can eat entire nation's wealth because they're so fearful of being non existent.

There's no doubt that we have many desires but we have to understand that whether this world is really compatible with them or not?

The desire to have much money so that we can get more materialistic objects is not evil in itself but it becomes evil when people try to fullfill it here and eventually prioritise it above moral values and everything else.

This is a valid desire to look good and beautiful, but spend all the time and effort only for that is the result of not being able to understand the life and eventually being the slave of desires.

This life is given to us not to fullfill all our desires but it's given to us to learn and develop more as human beings. The world's time bound nature is the greatest symbol that point towards life is a test and not a race. It's given to us to make us prepare for a better and eternal World.

No doubt money, outer appearance, prestige have their own reality but in this world we've come to learn kindness, compassion, love, empathy, and most importantly recognising our creator.

Timeless joy, happiness and peace is the core need of human beings. But man also needs sufferings & difficulties inorder to manifest his humanity. Therefore this world is perfect place for the test as it is full of both joy and suffering and also constrained in the boundary of time.

You can taste here everything but cannot preserve any of it because of its time-bound nature. Its joys, happiness and sufferings all are subjected to time. The prudent way is to approach towards timeless reality instead of falling into the deception of perishing achievements.

So here, chase your wiser desires and keep your deep desires reserved for the paradise. For if Allah swt didn't want to fulfill then he wouldn't have created desires. So enjoy the present life (duniya) in such a righteous way as not to destroy the future (paradise) ones.
